Overview

Blepharoplasty rejuvenates the eye area by removing excess skin, fat, and tissue from the upper and/or lower eyelids. The upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the most commonly performed facial procedures and can be performed under local anaesthesia as a walk-in, walk-out procedure.

Beyond cosmetic benefits, upper eyelid surgery can improve peripheral vision by 25–30 degrees and may relieve eye strain and headaches caused by heavy, drooping eyelids. The lower eyelid procedure addresses under-eye bags and puffiness, restoring a refreshed appearance.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty: Precise incisions are made along the natural crease of the eyelid. Excess skin, fat, and muscle are carefully removed. Fine sutures close the incision, and the resulting scar is completely concealed within the natural eyelid fold.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty: Two approaches are available depending on your needs. The transconjunctival approach (incision inside the eyelid) is ideal for fat prominence and leaves no visible scar. The transcutaneous approach (external incision) is better suited for skin or muscle laxity.

Fat can be conservatively repositioned rather than removed entirely, providing a more natural contour. Both upper and lower eyelid procedures can be performed together in a single session for comprehensive eye rejuvenation.

Risks & Considerations

• ⚠Haematoma/bleeding: Occurs in less than 1% of cases.
• ⚠Temporary dry eye or tearing: Common in the first 2–4 weeks and usually resolves with lubricating drops.
• ⚠Lower eyelid retraction: Occurs in approximately 5% of cases, where the lower eyelid sits slightly lower. Usually resolves with time or may require minor revision.
• ⚠Asymmetry: Minor differences between eyes may require revision surgery.
• ⚠Corneal irritation: Temporary irritation may occur and is managed with lubricating drops.
• ⚠Vision changes: Permanent vision changes are very rare (less than 0.05% of cases).
• ⚠Revision surgery: Required in 3–5% of cases for optimal results.
