Overview

Pinnaplasty reshapes and reposition the ears, bringing them closer to the head for a more aesthetically balanced appearance. This is one of the few cosmetic procedures performed on children—typically from age 5 years onwards, when the ears have fully developed and are at their final size.

The procedure can address protruding ears, asymmetric ear shapes, folding abnormalities, or the consequences of previous injury. Pinnaplasty is performed under local anaesthesia in adults and general anaesthesia in children, allowing same-day discharge for adult patients.

The results are permanent and immediately visible, though final refinement continues over the following months as swelling subsides.

Who Is This Procedure For?

What Does the Procedure Involve?

An incision is carefully made behind the ear, where it is completely hidden. The cartilage is then reshaped using permanent internal sutures to create or enhance the natural fold of the ear (the antihelical fold). This repositions the ear closer to the head.

Excess cartilage may be trimmed if necessary to achieve the desired shape and proportion. The fine sutures used to close the incision are placed behind the ear, ensuring the scar remains completely hidden.

A protective head bandage is worn for approximately one week following the procedure to maintain ear position and protect the healing incisions.

Risks & Considerations

• ⚠Haematoma: Occurs uncommonly. Minor bleeding may be managed conservatively or drained if necessary.
• ⚠Infection: Rare, but can be managed with antibiotics if it occurs.
• ⚠Asymmetry: Perfect symmetry cannot be guaranteed. Minor asymmetries are often imperceptible.
• ⚠Over-correction or under-correction: The ears may not achieve the exact desired position. Revision may be needed.
• ⚠Suture complications: Rare, but internal sutures may occasionally be felt or extrude. These are easily managed.
• ⚠Numbness: Temporary numbness around the ear is common and resolves within weeks.
• ⚠Scarring: The incision behind the ear results in a hidden scar that fades over time.
• ⚠Revision surgery: Required in 5–10% of cases for optimal results.
